FROM OUR LIBRARIAN
Welcome to the Media Center!
In August of this year, I will begin my 29th year on staff at Savannah Christian. I taught first and second grades for three years, and then moved into the position of Media Specialist for the Lower and Middle Schools. I earned a BA in English from Armstrong Atlantic University, plus an Early Elementary teaching certificate. I then completed my Masters in Instructional Media at Georgia Southern University.
I have been married to Jan Tootle, a retired pharmacist, for 50 years. We have a son and daughter, plus 5 grandsons ranging in age from 8 to 15 years old. One of my greatest joys is teaching with my daughter, Mrs. Slaughter in third grade, and teaching two of my grandsons.
The love of reading is something I hope to share with our students. Because it is such an integral part of all academics, my goal for our lower school students is to ignite that spark for reading that will carry on throughout their lives. It is important to me that children read for enjoyment as well as for information, so I try to make the Media Center an exciting place that is always changing with new and interesting books, displays, and activities.
Students come into the Media Center every other week for 40 minutes in Grades 1-5 and 30 minutes in PreK-K. They have story time, book talks, or instruction on research and the use of the Media Center, plus a check-out time. Students are encouraged to come to the Media Center any time allowed by their teacher.
My best advice to parents on reading is: Read aloud to your child until they beg you to give them the book so they can read it themselves! When a child sees a parent enjoying a book with them, it is the best advertisement for reading possible.
We are very fortunate to have two assistants that help me with the activities involved in our Media Centers. Mrs. Cone has worked with me for 10 years and is such a blessing to all of us at the Chatham Parkway Campus. At the DeRenne Avenue Campus, we have a new face, Mrs. Gunn, who will be a great help there this year.
If I can be of service to any of you, please let me know.
Sincerely,
Gloria Tootle
